Hardwood Information
Long lengths and wide boards are generally hard to find. You will normally pay a premium if it's available at all. Most often, narrow boards are used and glued up edge wise to get a more stable wide board product. 1x4 and 1x6 are normally readily available with an average length of about 9'. You can try to specify 16' lengths, but you will pay a premium if they are available. Wider boards, 1x8 - 1x10 - 1x12 are all incrimented accordingly in price as it gets wider in width.
Boards start off rough cut all edges chain sawn or band sawn right off the tree. This is the least expensive way of buying it. You then have to put your own straight edges on it and plane the surfaces and edges. Next we can order it with one straight edge already done, or we can order it with 2 straight edges ripped to your specified width. Then we can order it planed on one face or two faces. And finally we can order it S4S surfaced four sides meaning all edges and faces have been planed to ahcieve your specified dimensions. Naturally this is the most desireable way of getting hardwoods however you pay for each step in the process.
